TRENDS Research & Advisory and the European Foundation for Democracy organised an event in the European Parliament which examined cross national approaches to the role of ideology in radicalisation and violent extremism. The event was hosted by MEPs Lars Adaktusson (Sweden/EPP), Gérard Deprez (Belgium/ALDE) and Patricia Lalonde (France/ALDE).
This event brought together Members of the European Parliament, policy advisers, analysts and researchers who examined the role of ideology in furthering radicalisation. The Belgian Parliament issued a major report on the 2016 attacks in Brussels that identified the problems of ideology in furthering extremist views leading to radicalisation. Sweden has issued two reports in the past year on the influence of the Muslim Brotherhood and the furtherance of their ideology in Sweden and the impact this has had on radicalisation in Sweden. The importance of these reports cannot be understated as they further our understanding of ideology in radicalisation.
